Another tank car in our collection

For 20 years we were waiting for opportunity to obtain this unique vehicle – a four-axle American tank car from 1944. Unfortunately, for long years the car was outside of our reach – it was staying at the sidings of Siekierki power station and was used as a storage for transformer oil. During the changes of the facility owner in 2000 and 2010, the tank car together with other rolling stock from power plant became the possession of DB Schenker Rail Poland.

At this point, we decided to get back to the topic and actually obtain the car to our collection. After several years of negotiations we bought the car for a symbolic fee. The last task was to transport the tank car to our shed. Due to the heavy wear of the couplings and bearings, and short term of reclaiming we had to resign from the most preferred way of moving the car – namely on track. Once again, we had to ask for help the specialists of heavy load road transportation. A special road platform arrived at engine shed at night 15th/16th October and in the early morning the tank car was standing back again on tracks.

We would like to thank to

  • management and employees of DB Schenker Rail Polska SA for favorable response to our request to obtain the car,
  • employees of Siekierki power station (PGNiG Termika SA) for help in loading the vehicle,
  • employees of company “Panas” for professional transportation and unloading services.

This year’s works in „Łowicz annex” finished!

In the end of September, company “Marbudex” has finished the building works in the oldest part of the roundhouse called “Łowicz annex” (called so due to the proximity of track of line 11 to Łowicz). The works covered reconstruction of ceilings, roof and repairs of foundations. Just before the 170th anniversary of Warsaw-Vienna Railroad, the renovated building was acknowledged by the employees of Skierniewice’s branch of the Monuments Protection Office in Łódź.

To keep our earlier promise, we would like to invite all enthusiasts of photography for yet another photographic event, during which one can record on film or memory card the surroundings of Engine Shed without the interfering crowd of tourists. The event will take place on Saturday, 17th October from 12AM to 3PM.

Free admittance!

What an anniversary!

On 1st October 1845 a first scheduled train of Warsaw-Vienna Railroad has reached Skierniewice. On 3rd October, together with President of City Skierniewice and The Association of Transportation Engineers we celebrated the round 170th anniversary of this important event in Skierniewice’s history.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing track works on the neighboring railway station which temporarily cut the Shed off of the rest of line, many attractions was impossible to be executed. With regret we had to cancel the historical train with real steam engine or the exhibition of the contemporary rolling stock. Nevertheless, we decided to change the nature of the event to a more family-oriented. There were plenty of attractions for the youngest, those older and the oldest.

The Shed was open to the public from 11AM, but the official opening took place on 12AM with participations of

  • Jarosław Chęcielewski, the Deputy President of City Skierniewice,
  • Dorota Przybyła, vicepresident of The Association of Transportation Engineers,
  • Judyta Kurowska-Ciechańska, president of PARE.

We were also honored to visit other notable guests: Vicemarshal of Parliament – Mrs. Elżbieta Radziszewska, Deputy Dorota Rutkowska, the President of the branch of the Monuments Protection Office in Łódź – Mrs. Katarzyna Starecka and many other representatives of Voivodship, City offices and the companies from railway transportation branch.

After the official part, one could listen to the concert of a City’s Brass Band conducted by Szczepan Bieszczad or taste the special anniversary cake.

Of course, there were many other attractions awaiting the 742 guests, who decided to visit us on this day. Everybody could find something interesting for themselves – vintage cars…

… and those contemporary, in service on the railway.

The promotional stand of Łódź Agglomeration Railway caused a furore among the youngest guests. Thanks to the model shop Loko-Model, visitors could also see how a digitally controlled railway models work and company Thales Polska sp. z o.o. gave a presentation of the modern signals.

There would be no event in Shed without the traditional sightseeing inside the roundhouse or the exhibition of signaling devices. There were also two new exhibitions to visit: “Paper heritage of Warsaw-Vienna Railroad in its 170th Anniversary” by Paweł Mierosławski and “Steam shortens distances” by Aneta Majak and Andrzej Paszke.
