The beginning of September’s Open Days

do092015

The first Open Day in September is past us. On the first Saturday of September (5th September) we were visited by 195 guests. We would already like to invite you to the next Open Days which will take place in two weeks during the Skierniewice’s Holiday of Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables. Soon we will also announce the special Open Days for schools. The details will be published soon on our website and our Facebook profile.

First exhibit already in „Łowicz Annex”

Wąski - przed wyjazdem

A couple of days ago we have informed about the preparation of a place for the first exhibit in the refurbished „Łowicz Annex” – an 8-meters high semaphore. Due to the sizes of the signal, it had to be fixed in place before the roof was constructed – there were no other options. A new foundation for the signal was prepared and the signal itself was stripped of all parts for repainting and to make its transportation easier. It was patiently waiting inside the roundhouse.

Wąski - powrót

In the meantime, one of the companies working at the Skierniewice station rebuild was kind enough not only to lend us its crane for semaphore placement but also took the signal’s mast to special works were it was cleaned and repainted. In the last days of August, the company WAPO-TECH s.c. from Bulkow returned with the repainted mast and mounted it on the target place.

Thank you for your kind help.

The support of the Topex Group

spawarka od Grupy Topex

The Topex Group – the leader in the distribution of hand and power tools once again positively responded to our call for support. The company donated to us an inverter welder from the “Graphite” line of products. This new device will speed up the metal jobs by the rolling stock and other works in the shed. It will also help to develop the welding skills of our volunteers.  We would like to say big thanks for the support!

Paying tribute to the murdered

As in the previous year, we took part on 1st August in the ceremony by the monument commemorating the Pawiak’s prisoners, executed at the Skierniewice railway station during the end of Second World War. Our delegation, along the representatives of City Council, veterans, scouts, members of reconstruction group 26th Infantry Division and citizens of Skierniewice, put a symbolic bunch of flowers under the monument.

409!

Dzień Otwarty 1.08.2015

409! This is the exact number of the guests who decided to visit us on the August Open Day. As far as we can recall, this is the highest number of visitors present in the Shed on this month. We are really glad that the interest in the Engine Shed is still increasing. We would like to say a big “thank you” to those who visited us on the 1st August and we would like to invite all those interested in the history of railways to visit us on three consecutive occasions in September: traditional Open Day on 5th September and two Special Open Days during the Festival of Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables in Skierniewice (19th and 20th September). Admission is free.

Next stage of „Łowicz annex” renovation

On the last Friday, 24th July, another stage of rebuilding of the “Łowicz annex” concluded. On that day the building company “Marbudex” completed the last pour of concrete on the reinforced ceiling. There is a place for a small staircase as well as separate place for an old lever frame with holes for transmission wires. In the future the annex will become a new home of the interactive signaling exhibition, so each part of it has to withstand the weight of the exhibits and the tension of the wire transmission.

During the weekend, while the building crew was away, we prepared the base of the mechanical signal, which will be placed in the middle of the exhibition. The base must keep the several-meters high mast upright, so according to the blueprints it has to be sturdily built and fixed deep below the level of the floor. In the upcoming weeks the largest of the exhibits have to be placed inside, before the roof will be installed.

Building works in „Łowicz Annex”

The workers from the company “Marbudex” continue the revitalization works inside the oldest part of the roundhouse, the so-called Łowicz Annex.

Przybudówka łowicka - transport stali

After the construction of new walls, stairwell and foundations for lever frames and signal shafts, it’s time for a new reinforced ceiling. As it need to be sturdy to stand the weight of planned exhibits, first a heavy steel beams had to be put in place. A transport of new I-beams for this purpose has arrived just a few days ago. In the meantime a formwork is being constructed so in a couple of weeks a first pour of concrete could be completed. The finish of the current stage of works is planned at the early Autumn.
